When a young woman dies under mysterious circumstances following a failed exorcism, the Catholic Church finds itself on trial in this chilling courtroom drama. Laura Linney stars as Erin Bruner, a skeptical defense attorney hired to represent Father Richard Moore (played by Tom Wilkinson), the priest accused of negligent homicide in the death of Emily Rose, portrayed by Jennifer Carpenter. As the prosecution, led by Campbell Scott's relentless district attorney, paints the priest as a dangerous zealot, Erin begins to uncover disturbing evidence that suggests Emily's affliction may not have been a simple medical condition. Through haunting flashbacks that blur the line between faith and science, the film explores whether Emily was suffering from a severe psychological disorder or something far more sinister. Directed by Scott Derrickson, this gripping thriller weaves together elements of horror and legal drama, creating an atmosphere of mounting dread as the trial forces everyone to confront their deepest beliefs about good, evil, and the unknown.
