In this delightfully absurd short comedy from director Sydney Adams, a hapless young man finds himself trapped in a bizarre afterlife that is neither heaven nor hell, but a kitschy roadside purgatory run by a chaotic staff. The film follows the protagonist as he attempts to navigate this strange limbo, where the rules of existence are as unpredictable as the quirky denizens who inhabit it. Motivated by a desperate desire to move on to a better place, he must contend with the eccentric gatekeepers, including a deadpan clerk played by Katerina Eichenberger and a mischievous handyman portrayed by Danny Kang. Co-written by Shelby Slauer and Sydney Adams, the film balances its high-concept premise with a dry, irreverent tone that keeps the audience laughing at the absurdities of the afterlife. As the protagonist gets tangled in a series of bureaucratic mishaps and surreal encounters, including a memorable appearance from Andrew Hunter, he discovers that escaping purgatory might require more than just good behavior. With its tight 14-minute runtime, Deuce Purgatory delivers a punchy, clever exploration of what happens when the final destination turns out to be a very strange rest stop.
