Deep in the Maryland woods, a terrifying mystery unfolds when James Donahue, played by James Allen McCune, discovers footage that suggests his sister Heather, who vanished years earlier in the Black Hills Forest, may still be alive. Driven by hope and desperation, James assembles a small team including his friend Peter (Brandon Scott), aspiring filmmaker Ashley (Corbin Reid), and a pair of local enthusiasts, Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Callie Hernandez), who claim to have uncovered evidence of Heather’s fate. As they venture into the dense, foreboding wilderness armed with modern GPS and cameras, their expedition quickly descends into a nightmare of unexplained sounds, eerie stick figures, and an unrelenting sense of being watched. Directed by Adam Wingard with a relentless, claustrophobic intensity, this horror film amplifies the found-footage genre’s primal fear of the unknown, trapping its characters in a labyrinth of time and terror where the forest itself seems alive. With every step, the line between reality and supernatural malevolence blurs, forcing James and his companions to confront an ancient evil that has lurked in the shadows for centuries.
