In the summer of 1973, a Hollywood maverick rewrites the rules of America's pastime in this rousing and heartfelt documentary. When Bing Russell, father of actor Kurt Russell, purchases a struggling minor league baseball team in Portland, he creates the Portland Mavericks—the first independent club in decades, free from the corporate farm system. Staffed by cast-offs, has-beens, and never-weres, including a young Kurt Russell himself, the team becomes a ragtag band of underdogs who capture the heart of a city. Directed by Chapman Way and Maclain Way, the film chronicles how this band of self-proclaimed "battered bastards," fueled by pure love of the game and a rebellious spirit, challenges the monolithic establishment of professional baseball. It's an irresistible story of defiance, community, and the sheer joy of playing ball, proving that sometimes the most memorable legends are written far from the major league spotlight.
