For young Alexander, played by Ed Oxenbould, every day feels like a disaster, but his family seems to skate through life with perfect ease. On the eve of his birthday, after yet another terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, he makes a secret birthday wish that his family might finally understand what it’s like when everything goes wrong. To his shock, the wish comes true, and the next morning, his normally successful parents, portrayed by Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner, and his seemingly charmed siblings find their worlds hilariously falling apart in a spectacular chain reaction of chaos. Directed by Miguel Arteta, this uproarious family comedy captures the universal feeling of a day where nothing goes right, as the entire Cooper family navigates a non-stop parade of comedic calamities, from disastrous job interviews and driving test fiascos to a preschool party gone wildly out of control. Through the shared experience of epic misfortune, they discover that sometimes the worst days can bring a family closer together.
