this corny underdog football drama has decent performances but doesn't quite live up to the inspiring history lesson or deep character study it could have been
the film, which is based on a true story, is either the best satire of all time, or one of the most generic and boring sports movies to have ever been made
it's the kind of film that is rife with lines about making a "real difference" and a "purpose greater than football" -- all delivered with a straight face

inspired by a true story of parentless teenagers whose tenacity on the gridiron raised spirits in the late 1930s, “12 Mighty Orphans” is a plodding football drama in which the characters talk to one another like folksy social workers
for those who find these kinds of pictures predictable and painfully corny, there are still small pleasures scattered throughout, from some striking images of spare Texas farmland to solid performances by the always engaging Luke Wilson and Martin Sheen
elsewhere, "12 Mighty Orphans" manages to subvert a few of the expected cliches to reasonably original effect, and the ensemble of lesser-known young actors is across-the-board strong
an inspirational sports story; 12 Mighty Orphans may not be particularly original in many ways, but the execution proves its effectiveness and worthiness; This one won't win awards, but it does go down easy, providing enjoyment along the way
"12 Mighty Orphans" is a familiar story with its own unique elements reminding us of the definition of family in its truest form; The film has plenty of lessons.. and all of which will leave you feeling satisfied and buoyed with hope
