Formed in Irvine, California in 1998, Thrice emerged as one of the most innovative and respected bands in the post-hardcore and alternative rock scenes, known for their musical ambition, intellectual lyricism, and consistent evolution. The group was founded by high school friends guitarist and vocalist Dustin Kensrue and lead guitarist Teppei Teranishi, who were soon joined by bassist Eddie Breckenridge and his brother, drummer Riley Breckenridge. Their early work established a signature sound of aggressive, melodic hardcore characterized by complex time signatures and intricate guitar work, first captured on their 2001 debut Identity Crisis and more fully realized on the influential albums The Illusion of Safety (2002) and The Artist in the Ambulance (2003).

The band's creative trajectory took a significant turn with their fourth album, 2005's Vheissu, which became a major critical and commercial breakthrough. This record marked a bold departure, incorporating electronic textures, piano, and experimental song structures into their heavy foundation, showcasing a band unwilling to be confined by genre. This spirit of exploration reached its zenith with The Alchemy Index (2007-2008), an ambitious four-volume project themed around the elements of fire, water, air, and earth, each EP featuring distinct musical aesthetics. Subsequent albums like Beggars (2009) and Major/Minor (2011) refined this experimental approach into a more cohesive and mature rock sound.

Following an extensive tour in support of Major/Minor, Thrice announced an indefinite hiatus in 2012. The break proved temporary, however, as Dustin Kensrue and Teppei Teranishi were inspired to reunite after attending a concert by fellow rock act Brand New. The band officially returned in 2015, releasing the well-received album To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere in 2016, which addressed modern social and political anxieties. This reformation began a prolific new chapter, yielding the albums Palms in 2018 and Horizons / East in 2021, each continuing their tradition of thoughtful, dynamically powerful rock music. Throughout their career, Thrice has distinguished themselves not only through their artistic integrity but also through their philanthropic efforts, donating a portion of proceeds from each album release to a charitable organization.
