Emerging from Melbourne's vibrant music scene in 2005, The Temper Trap established themselves as one of Australia's most successful indie rock exports of the late 2000s, achieving global recognition with their atmospheric sound and anthemic singles. The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Dougy Mandagi, bassist Jonathon Aherne, and drummer Toby Dundas, with guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto joining the lineup shortly after its formation. They honed their craft locally before making a pivotal move to London in 2008, seeking to broaden their international reach.

Their debut album, "Conditions," released in June 2009, became their breakthrough work. It was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number nine on the ARIA Albums Chart and entering the top 30 in the United Kingdom. The album's lead single, "Sweet Disposition," became a worldwide phenomenon, reaching the top 10 in Belgium, Ireland, and the UK, and achieving platinum status in multiple countries. Its enduring popularity was further cemented by its feature in the soundtrack for the film 500 Days of Summer. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010, The Temper Trap's success was formally recognized as they won Best Group, and "Sweet Disposition" earned the award for Most Popular Australian Single.

The band's self-titled second album arrived in mid-2012, showcasing a more expansive and polished rock sound. It debuted at number one on the Australian album chart and was another critical and commercial triumph, leading to further ARIA Award wins for Best Group and Best Rock Album in 2012. During the recording process for their third album, the group underwent a significant lineup change when founding guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto departed in October 2013. The band continued as a trio, later welcoming guitarist Joseph Greer into the fold.

Their third studio album, "Thick as Thieves," was released in June 2016, preceded by singles like "Fall Together" and "Riverina." While maintaining their signature grand soundscapes, the album explored new rhythmic and textural directions. The Temper Trap maintains a dedicated global fanbase and continues to tour and perform, their live shows renowned for the powerful, soaring vocals of Mandagi and their dynamic instrumentation. Their journey from Melbourne pubs to international festival stages is defined by a catalog of emotionally resonant rock anthems that have secured their place in modern alternative music history.
