The Mars Volta emerged from the creative ashes of the influential post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, establishing themselves as one of the most ambitious and sonically adventurous progressive rock acts of the 21st century. Formed in Los Angeles in 2001 by guitarist and producer Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist and lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the band was conceived as a vehicle for unfettered experimentation, blending punk energy with psychedelic rock, Latin rhythms, free jazz, and complex, conceptual storytelling. Their partnership formed the unwavering core of the group throughout its many iterations and phases.
Seeking to expand their musical palette, Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala recruited bassist Eva Gardner, keyboardist Isaiah "Ikey" Owens, drummer Jon Theodore, and sound manipulator Jeremy Ward for their initial lineup. They introduced their dense, sprawling sound with the 2002 EP Tremulant. For their critically acclaimed 2003 debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium, produced by Rick Rubin, Gardner was temporarily replaced in the studio by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album's success set the stage for their commercial peak with 2005's Frances the Mute, a self-produced epic that debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Gold. This period solidified a longterm lineup that included bassist Juan Alderete and Omar's brother, Marcel Rodríguez-López, on keyboards.
The band continued to evolve over subsequent albums like Amputechture (2006) and the Grammy-winning The Bedlam in Goliath (2008), which earned them a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for the single "Wax Simulacra." After releasing Octahedron (2009) and Noctourniquet (2012), and following a series of reunion shows with At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta entered a hiatus in late 2012. The band formally dissolved in early 2013 amid a rift between the two founders. Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala later reconciled, collaborating on the project Antemasque and further reactivating At the Drive-In.
The Mars Volta reunited in secret in 2019, quietly recording new music. After a decade of public inactivity, they dramatically announced their return in June 2022 with an art installation and subsequently released their self-titled seventh album, which featured the core duo alongside returning founding member Eva Gardner, Marcel Rodríguez-López, and drummer Willy Rodriguez Quiñones. For their live comeback, they expanded the lineup to include jazz pianist Leo Genovese and drummer Linda-Philomène Tsoungui. The band continues to push forward, releasing their ninth studio album, Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio, in April 2025, reaffirming their status as relentless sonic pioneers.
