The Damned Things was an American heavy metal supergroup that emerged from a unique convergence of punk, hardcore, and thrash metal pedigrees. Formed in 2009, the band was a notable collaboration between members of several prominent rock acts, including Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die, and later Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio. Their sound blended the melodic sensibilities of their members' primary projects with a heavier, more classic rock and metal-infused approach, creating a distinct identity that intrigued fans across genre lines.
The concept for the band originated from the long-standing friendship between Scott Ian and Joe Trohman, who had discussed collaborating for years. They were joined by Andy Hurley and Rob Caggiano, also of Anthrax, with Keith Buckley completing the initial lineup as vocalist. The band's name was inspired by a lyric in Ram Jam's 1977 version of "Black Betty." They quickly entered the studio to record their debut album, "Ironiclast," which was released in December 2010. The album was preceded by the single "We've Got a Situation Here," which served as their claim to fame and introduced their gritty, anthemic sound to a wider audience.
Following the release of "Ironiclast," The Damned Things embarked on a tour to support the record, including performances on the 2011 Vans Warped Tour. Despite positive critical reception, the supergroup entered a long period of inactivity as members returned to focus on their primary, and increasingly busy, bands. Anthrax, Fall Out Boy, and Every Time I Die all experienced significant career revivals or intensive touring schedules, leaving little room for the collaborative project.
After nearly a decade of silence, The Damned Things surprised fans by reconvening in 2019 with a slightly altered lineup. Rob Caggiano had departed, and Dan Andriano joined on bass, with Joe Trohman moving to guitar. They released two new singles, "Cells" and "Something Good," signaling a renewed creative energy. This led to their second studio album, "High Crimes," which arrived in April 2019. The record showcased a more refined and cohesive version of their hard rock sound, earning praise for its sharp songwriting and powerful performances.
The band promoted "High Crimes" with a series of live dates, but their activity was again limited by the commitments of its constituent members. The eventual disbandment of Every Time I Die and the relentless schedules of Fall Out Boy and Anthrax continued to pose challenges. The Damned Things remains a celebrated and intriguing chapter in modern rock history, a testament to the creative sparks that fly when musicians from different corners of the rock world unite for a common purpose.
