The Black Crowes Biography

news-detailsThe Black Crowes are an influential American rock band renowned for their hard rock sound infused with Southern rock elements. Formed in 1984 in Atlanta, Georgia, the band originally went by the name Mr. Crowes Garden before changing it to The Black Crowes. They quickly gained recognition in the music industry, ultimately becoming one of the prominent bands of the early '90s rock scene, especially with the release of their debut album, "Shake Your Money Maker," in 1990.

The Black Crowes were signed to Def American Recordings in 1989, under the guidance of producer George Drakoulias. The success of "Shake Your Money Maker" catapulted them into the spotlight, featuring hit singles like "She Talks to Angels" and "Hard to Handle." Their follow-up album, "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion," released in 1992, solidified their status as rock icons by reaching the top of the Billboard 200. The band's sound resonated with fans, leading to widespread acclaim and commercial success.

Over the years, The Black Crowes released several albums, including "Amorica" (1994), "Three Snakes and One Charm" (1996), "By Your Side" (1999), and "Lions" (2001). While these albums enjoyed moderate popularity, they did not achieve the same level of chart success as their earlier works. The band took a hiatus in 2002, during which its members pursued various solo projects. However, they reunited in 2005 and toured extensively, eventually releasing "Warpaint" in 2008, which peaked at number 5 on the Billboard chart.

In 2010, the band celebrated its 20th anniversary with the release of "Croweology," a greatest hits/acoustic double album. They embarked on a tour to commemorate this milestone before entering a second hiatus. After a brief tour in 2013, The Black Crowes announced another breakup in 2015. However, the band reformed in late 2019 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Shake Your Money Maker," with Chris and Rich Robinson as the sole constant members of the lineup.

As of August 2023, The Black Crowes have a new lineup that includes the Robinson brothers, longtime bassist Sven Pipien, and new members Nico Bereciartua (lead guitar), Cully Symington (drums), and Erik Deutsch (keyboards). Their latest album, "Happiness Bastards," released in March 2024, has garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for the Best Rock Album Grammy later that year. In 2025, the band was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time, recognizing their significant contributions to the rock music landscape.

Throughout their career, The Black Crowes have sold over 30 million albums and have been celebrated for their energetic live performances. They are listed as number 92 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and were dubbed "The Most Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World" by Melody Maker. Additionally, the readers of Rolling Stone voted them 'Best New American Band' in 1990, a testament to their impactful presence in the music industry.
