Emerging from the Chicago suburbs in the early 2000s, The Academy Is... became a defining voice in the pop-punk and alternative rock scene, known for their sharp lyricism and anthemic hooks. Formed in Hoffman Estates, Illinois in 2003, the band originally performed under the name The Academy, a moniker they expanded in 2004 to avoid legal conflicts with other groups. The founding lineup featured vocalist William Beckett, guitarist Michael Carden, bassist Adam T. Siska, and drummer Andy Mrotek.

Their breakthrough arrived with the 2005 debut album Almost Here, released on Pete Wentz's Decaydance imprint under Fueled by Ramen. The record, featuring the enduring fan favorites "Checkmarks" and "Slow Down," captured the angst and ambition of the era and solidified their place alongside scene peers like Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco. They supported the album with relentless touring, building a dedicated fanbase. The band's sophomore effort, 2007's Santi, showcased a darker, more ambitious sonic palette, incorporating elements of dance-rock and featuring a guest appearance from William Beckett's then-girlfriend, singer Greta Salpeter of The Hush Sound.

In 2008, The Academy Is... released Fast Times at Barrington High, a concept album inspired by their high school experiences that debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200, marking their highest chart position. Despite this commercial peak, the band entered a period of hiatus after touring concluded. They officially announced their disbandment on October 8, 2011. A brief reunion occurred in May 2015 for a one-off "farewell" performance at Riot Fest to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Almost Here.

The story of The Academy Is... took an unexpected turn in 2022 when they announced a full reunion, headlined by a return performance at that year's Riot Fest. This resurgence led to the creation of new music, culminating in March 2026 with the release of Almost There, their first studio album in eighteen years. The release marked a new chapter for the group, reconnecting with their audience while introducing their signature sound to a new generation. The band continues to perform, celebrating a catalog that has left a lasting imprint on the landscape of 2000s rock music.
