Tenth Avenue North
Tenth Avenue North emerged as one of the most impactful and successful bands in contemporary Christian music during the late 2000s and 2010s, known for their introspective lyrics and melodic pop-rock sound. The group originated in West Palm Beach, Florida, where founding members Mike Donehey, Jason Jamison, and others met while attending Palm Beach Atlantic University. They derived their distinctive name from a major east-west thoroughfare in Palm Beach County, grounding their identity in their shared local roots.
The band's career breakthrough arrived with the 2008 single "Love Is Here," a song that resonated deeply with audiences and announced their arrival on the national stage. This success was solidified with their major-label debut album, Over and Underneath, which established their signature style of wrestling with faith and doubt through accessible songwriting. Over the following decade, Tenth Avenue North released a prolific series of albums, including The Light Meets the Dark, The Struggle, and No Shame, with six of their eight studio albums charting on the Billboard 200. Their catalog produced multiple RIAA gold-certified singles, and their 2016 album Followers even reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, a significant achievement for a Christian act.
Throughout their active years, the core lineup featured Mike Donehey as lead vocalist and primary lyricist, Jason Jamison on drums, Jeff Owen on guitar, Ruben Juarez on bass, and Brendon Shirley on keyboards. Their music often explored themes of grace, redemption, and personal struggle, earning them a dedicated fanbase and numerous Dove Award nominations. In a surprising move, the band announced in February 2020 that they would amicably disband to allow members to focus on their families and individual pursuits, planning a final farewell tour. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted those plans, leading to the tour's cancellation, but the quintet reunited for one final performance in Florida in April 2021.
However, the story of Tenth Avenue North took another unexpected turn. In November 2023, Mike Donehey announced that the band had reformed and would embark on a new tour in 2024, marking a new chapter for the influential group. This reunion delighted fans and signaled the return of their thoughtful brand of Christian music to the concert stage.
