Tamar Kaprelian
Tamar Kaprelian emerged as a pop singer and songwriter whose career was launched through a unique digital contest, leading to a major label deal and an international platform that included representing Armenia at the Eurovision Song Contest. Born Tamar Mardirossian on October 28, 1986, in Scottsdale, Arizona, she grew up in a family with Armenian heritage, which would later become a central pillar of her artistic and philanthropic identity. Her early interest in music was nurtured from a young age, setting the stage for her eventual pursuit of a career in the industry.
Her breakthrough arrived in 2008 when she won an online cover contest for the song "Apologize," hosted by the band OneRepublic. This victory brought her to the attention of the band's frontman, Ryan Tedder, who was instrumental in introducing her to executives at Interscope Records. Shortly after, Kaprelian signed with the prestigious label. Her debut single, "New Day," was released in 2009 and served as her initial claim to fame, building anticipation for her first album. In 2010, she released her debut studio album, Sinner or a Saint, under Interscope, establishing her in the pop genre with her confessional songwriting and melodic sensibilities.
Kaprelian's career took a significant turn toward international stages in 2015. She was recruited by Public Television of Armenia to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest as a member of the supergroup Genealogy. The group, formed to symbolize the Armenian diaspora, performed the song "Face the Shadow" and ultimately placed sixteenth in the competition held in Vienna. This experience deepened her connection to her Armenian roots. She later attempted to represent Armenia as a solo artist at Eurovision in 2018, entering the national selection Depi Evratesil with the song "Poison (Ari Ari)," but was eliminated during the semi-final round.
Beyond her recording and performing career, Tamar Kaprelian has made substantial contributions as a philanthropist and mentor. She founded the Nvak Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to discovering, educating, and empowering the next generation of Armenian singers, songwriters, and musicians. The foundation runs songwriting camps, educational programs, and provides creative opportunities for young artists in Armenia and the diaspora, reflecting Kaprelian's commitment to giving back to her cultural community. She continues to create music while actively leading her foundation's initiatives.
