Story of the Year Biography

news-detailsEmerging from the vibrant St. Louis music scene, Story of the Year established itself as a potent force in the punk and metal-alternative landscape, achieving mainstream success in the early 2000s with their emotionally charged anthems and dynamic live performances. The band's journey began in 1995 under the name 67 North, a moniker that would evolve through several changes before solidifying into the name known to fans worldwide. After a period performing as Big Blue Monkey starting in 1998, the group officially rebranded as Story of the Year in 2002, coinciding with the release of their self-titled EP on Criterion Records.

The band's major label debut, "Page Avenue" in 2003, proved to be their commercial breakthrough, catapulting them into the spotlight with powerful singles like "Until the Day I Die" and "Anthem of Our Dying Day." The album's blend of melodic post-hardcore and raw energy resonated with a generation, defining the band's early sound and earning them a dedicated following. Their subsequent album, 2005's "In the Wake of Determination," adopted a heavier, more aggressive tone but did not replicate the chart success of its predecessor. This period marked a shift for the band, leading them to the independent label Epitaph Records for their next releases.

Story of the Year continued to build their catalog with "The Black Swan" in 2008 and "The Constant" in 2010, further refining their signature style. After a hiatus and lineup changes, the band reconnected with their fanbase directly through a PledgeMusic campaign in 2016 to fund their fifth studio album. This effort resulted in 2017's "Wolves," an album produced by Aaron Sprinkle and mixed by renowned engineers Tom Lord-Alge and J Hall. The record signaled a strong and self-determined return for the group.

In 2023, with the return of original bassist Adam Russell solidifying the lineup as a four-piece, Story of the Year released "Tear Me to Pieces." This album served as both a reaffirmation of their core sound and a testament to their enduring creative partnership. The band supported the release with an extensive world tour throughout 2023 and 2024, demonstrating their lasting connection with audiences and their unwavering presence in the rock genre. From their humble beginnings in Missouri to international stages, Story of the Year maintains a career built on passionate music and a resilient, DIY spirit.
