Moses Michael Levi Barrow, known professionally as Shyne, is a Belizean politician and former rapper whose remarkable life journey has taken him from the streets of Brooklyn to the highest levels of Belizean government. Born Jamal Michael Barrow on November 8, 1978, in Belize City, he moved to New York City as a child and was raised by his mother in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. His path to hip-hop began serendipitously when he was discovered freestyling in a barbershop, a moment that would set the stage for a rapid ascent in the music industry.
Shyne's early career was closely tied to Sean Combs and his Bad Boy Records label. He contributed to several high-profile albums, including the Notorious B.I.G.'s posthumous release Born Again, Mase's Double Up, Sean Combs's Forever, Usher's Confessions, and Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV. His most commercially recognized singles from 2000 include "Bad Boyz" and "Bonnie & Shyne," both featuring Barrington Levy. On the verge of releasing his debut album, however, his life took a dramatic turn. On the evening of December 27, 1999, he was at a New York City nightclub with Sean Combs and Jennifer Lopez when an argument broke out and gunshots followed, leaving three bystanders injured. In June 2001, Shyne was convicted of assault and unlawful possession of a weapon and sentenced to ten years in prison.
Despite his incarceration, his eponymous debut album was released in September 2000 and went gold the following month. He continued to record music while in prison, releasing his sophomore studio album, Godfather Buried Alive, under Def Jam Recordings in 2004. During his time behind bars, Shyne underwent a profound personal transformation, becoming interested in Judaism and eventually practicing Orthodox Judaism. In 2006, he officially changed his name to Moses Michael Levi Barrow.
After his release from prison in late 2009, Shyne was deported to Belize. In 2010, he moved to Jerusalem, where he devoted himself to studying the Torah for up to twelve hours a day. He returned to Belize in 2013 and was appointed Belize Music and Goodwill Ambassador, with a mandate to support the national music industry. His transition into public service culminated in his election to the Belizean House of Representatives in the 2020 general election as a member of the center-right United Democratic Party. He served as Leader of the Opposition and leader of the United Democratic Party between June and September 2021, and again from February 2022.
In November 2024, a documentary about his extraordinary life, The Honorable Shyne, was released by Hulu and Andscape, chronicling his evolution from chart-topping rapper to incarcerated artist to Belizean political leader. His story remains one of the most unusual and compelling arcs in both entertainment and politics.
