Lee Seung-hyun, universally known by his stage name Seungri, was once one of the most recognizable faces in K-pop as the youngest member of the legendary boy band BigBang. Born on December 12, 1990, in Gwangju, South Korea, he rose to international stardom in the mid-2000s alongside G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, and Daesung. As the group’s charismatic "maknae," Seungri carved out a distinct identity with his polished dance moves, playful persona, and growing ambition as a solo artist. His trajectory, however, took a dramatic and infamous turn, as he became the central figure in the Burning Sun scandal, a saga that ultimately dismantled his career and led to his criminal conviction.

Seungri’s early musical career was defined by his rapid evolution from a youthful idol to a more mature performer. With BigBang’s second studio album Remember (2008), which featured a solo track by Seungri, he began shedding his boyish image. This artistic maturation continued with the release of his first Korean EP, V.V.I.P (2011), which topped the charts and yielded the hit singles "VVIP" and "What Can I Do." He transitioned to the screen with roles in the films Nineteen (2009) and Why Did You Come to My House? (2009). His television career included appearances in the Japanese drama Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo (2013) and the South Korean series Angel Eyes (2014). These ventures painted the picture of a multi-talented entertainer, yet his most consequential pursuits lay in his business dealings, which would ultimately expose a web of illegal activities.

In early 2019, allegations surfaced that Seungri had arranged prostitution services for potential investors in his nightclub ventures, including the infamous Burning Sun club in Seoul. The ensuing police investigation unraveled a massive scandal involving drug use, sexual bribery, and corruption. On March 11, 2019, Seungri announced his departure from BigBang and his retirement from the entertainment industry. He was formally charged with sexual bribery and embezzlement, and in 2020, he was convicted. During his mandatory military service, a military trial began in September 2020, where he denied seven of the eight charges against him. In August 2021, the military court found him guilty on all counts, sentencing him to three years in prison and a fine of ?1.15 billion (approximately US$970,000). His sentence was later reduced to 18 months in January 2022 after he pleaded guilty to all charges and expressed remorse, stating he would reflect on his actions.

Seungri was released from prison on February 9, 2023, marking the end of a spectacular fall from grace. Once celebrated as a global pop sensation and savvy businessman, his legacy is now inextricably linked to the scandal that ended his career.
