Roxette Biography

news-detailsRoxette was a highly acclaimed Swedish pop rock duo that achieved international fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Comprised of vocalist Marie Fredriksson and guitarist Per Gessle, the group became synonymous with catchy melodies and emotive lyrics, carving out a significant place in music history. Their breakout single, "The Look," released in 1989, catapulted them to global stardom and remains one of their signature tracks.

The duo's origins trace back to Halmstad, Sweden, where both Fredriksson and Gessle were already established in their music careers before forming Roxette. Fredriksson had released several successful solo albums, while Gessle was well-known as the lead singer and songwriter of the band Gyllene Tider, which had produced multiple number one albums in Sweden. Their collaboration began on the advice of Rolf Nygren, the CEO of their mutual record label, EMI. This partnership resulted in the release of "Neverending Love," the lead single from their debut album, "Pearls of Passion," in 1986, which became a hit in Sweden.

Roxette's international breakthrough came with the release of "Look Sharp!" in 1988, which featured two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: "The Look" and "Listen to Your Heart." The album established them as a formidable force in the pop rock genre. Their subsequent hit, "It Must Have Been Love," featured in the soundtrack of the 1990 film Pretty Woman, further solidified their status. The duo continued to release successful music, with their third studio album, "Joyride," in 1991, selling an impressive eleven million copies worldwide and spawning another number-one hit with the title track.

Throughout their career, Roxette maintained a dedicated fan base, performing for over 1.5 million people during the "Join the Joyride! Tour." Their discography expanded with albums such as "Tourism," "Crash! Boom! Bang!," and the greatest hits compilation "Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!" which each sold at least five million copies globally. They continued to release music through the late 1990s, with albums "Have a Nice Day" and "Room Service" earning numerous accolades in Europe and Latin America.

In 2002, Fredriksson faced a significant personal challenge when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, leading to a hiatus for the duo. During this period, both members pursued solo projects, with Gessle reuniting with Gyllene Tider. However, in 2009, Roxette made a triumphant return, embarking on an extensive world tour that lasted until 2016. During this time, they released new material, including the albums "Charm School," "Travelling," and "Good Karma."

Sadly, Fredriksson announced her retirement from touring in 2016 due to her declining health, and she passed away on December 9, 2019, due to complications from cancer. Despite this loss, Roxette remains Sweden's second-best-selling musical act, having sold between 75 and 80 million records worldwide. They are recognized as one of the highest-certified acts in Germany and have achieved significant success in the United Kingdom and the United States, with multiple number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

In recent years, Gessle has continued to contribute to music under the name PG Roxette, releasing the album "Pop-Up Dynamo!" in 2022. In 2024, he announced plans for a new Roxette tour, featuring Lena Philipsson as the lead vocalist, ensuring that the legacy of this iconic duo continues to resonate with fans around the world.
