PnB Rock Biography

news-detailsPnB Rock, born Rakim Hasheem Allen, was a Philadelphia-born singer and rapper who carved out a distinctive space in contemporary hip-hop and R&B with his melodic, emotionally resonant style. His career, marked by a rapid ascent and collaborations with major artists, was tragically cut short in 2022. He remains best known for his breakthrough triple-platinum single "Selfish" and his unique ability to blend street narratives with catchy, vulnerable hooks.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Allen's early life was shaped by the challenges of his environment, including periods of homelessness and time spent in juvenile detention centers. It was during a stint in a youth development center that he began to seriously focus on music, taking his stage name from the intersection of Pastorius and Baynton Streets in his Germantown neighborhood. He first gained traction by uploading his music to YouTube, where his raw talent and relatable stories quickly garnered a dedicated online following. This grassroots success led to a pivotal signing with Atlantic Records in 2015.

His major breakthrough arrived in 2016 with the release of "Selfish," a smooth, introspective track that peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually earned a triple-platinum certification. The song served as the lead single for his 2017 commercial mixtape GTTM: Goin Thru the Motions, which debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200. That same year, he was selected for the prestigious XXL Freshman Class, cementing his status as a rising star. His official debut studio album, Catch These Vibes, followed later in 2017, reaching number 17 on the Billboard 200. He achieved his highest chart placement with his 2019 sophomore album, TrapStar Turnt PopStar, which debuted at number four, showcasing his dual artistic personas.

PnB Rock became a sought-after collaborator, lending his distinctive vocals to several high-profile hits. He was featured on Ed Sheeran's "Cross Me," the posthumous XXXTentacion track "Changes," Meek Mill's "Dangerous," and YFN Lucci's "Everyday We Lit," all of which charted within the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. His work consistently demonstrated a versatility that appealed to both the hip-hop and pop markets.

On September 12, 2022, PnB Rock was fatally shot during a robbery at a Los Angeles restaurant. He was 30 years old. His death sent shockwaves through the music community, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow artists. In August 2024, Freddie Lee Trone, one of the individuals involved in the incident, was found guilty of first-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy. PnB Rock's musical legacy endures through his catalog of hits and influential melodic style, which continues to inspire a generation of artists blending rap and R&B.
