Phantogram emerged from the small town of Greenwich, New York, as one of the most distinctive dream pop and electronic rock duos of their generation. Formed in 2007 by lifelong friends Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, the pair crafted a signature sound that seamlessly wove together lush synth textures, hypnotic beats, and haunting vocal harmonies, drawing comparisons to acts like Portishead and M83. Their name, inspired by an optical illusion, reflected their music's ability to merge shadow and light, the organic and the electronic, into a captivating whole.
The duo's early work was rooted in a shared history that began in childhood. Barthel and Carter started writing music together in a remote barn studio in Greenwich, an isolated environment that profoundly shaped their atmospheric and introspective sound. Their self-released 2009 debut EP, "Phantogram," caught the attention of the indie label Barsuk Records, which re-released it and set the stage for their first full-length album. That album, 2010's "Eyelid Movies," was met with critical acclaim for its cinematic scope and established their reputation as masterful mood-setters within the alternative music scene.
A period of intense touring and creative growth followed, culminating in their breakthrough sophomore album, "Voices," released in 2014. This record marked a major milestone, debuting at number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawning the hit single "Fall in Love." The album's success was amplified by high-profile placements in commercials, video games, and films, significantly expanding their audience. Their evolving sound and increased visibility led to notable collaborations, including work with Big Boi of OutKast on the collaborative album "Big Grams" and contributions to tracks by The Flaming Lips and Run the Jewels.
Following the success of "Voices," Phantogram continued to refine their darkly melodic style on subsequent albums like 2016's "Three" and 2019's "Ceremony." These works explored themes of grief and personal loss with a raw honesty, further deepening the emotional resonance of their music. They maintained a consistent presence on festival stages and headlining tours, known for their immersive and visually striking live performances. The duo remains active, continuing to write and record new material, and stands as a testament to the potent creative synergy that can arise from a deep, long-standing partnership.
