He first came to widespread attention as the wisecracking, loyal best friend Vinnie Delpino on the beloved medical comedy-drama Doogie Howser, M.D., where he starred alongside Neil Patrick Harris from 1989 to 1993. This early role established Casella as a gifted comedic actor with an everyman charm, but it was his dramatic turn as the troubled and volatile mobster Benny Fazio in the landmark HBO series The Sopranos that showcased his impressive range. His performance in the show, often cited as one of the greatest in television history, brought him into the orbit of James Gandolfini and David Chase, solidifying his reputation as a reliable and compelling character actor.
Casella’s career continued to flourish in the 2010s with a series of high-profile period dramas. He delivered a standout performance as the ruthless and ambitious gangster Lucien D'Alessio in the HBO prohibition-era series Boardwalk Empire, earning him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2012. He then reunited with Martin Scorsese—who had directed him on Boardwalk Empire—for the 1970s music industry drama Vinyl, where he played the record executive Julie Silver. Beyond the small screen, Casella lent his distinctive voice to the beloved video game franchise Jak and Daxter, providing the voice for the sarcastic ottsel Daxter across multiple installments, a role that endeared him to a generation of gamers.
Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Casella developed an early interest in acting, attending the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School before studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
