Emerging from the UK's vibrant electropop scene in the late 2000s, Little Boots, born Victoria Christina Hesketh, established herself as a synth-pop auteur known for her melodic hooks and futuristic soundscapes. The Blackpool-born artist carved out a distinct niche, blending classic pop sensibilities with modern electronic production, achieving chart success and critical acclaim as both a recording artist and an in-demand DJ.
Her musical journey began early, studying piano from the age of five and winning a local talent contest at twelve. After studying cultural studies at the University of Leeds, she initially found her footing as the lead singer of the indie-dance band Dead Disco. Venturing out as a solo artist under the moniker Little Boots, a name inspired by her mother's childhood nickname, she quickly garnered attention through her early demos and a popular YouTube channel where she performed covers and original songs on instruments like a Tenori-on and a stylophone. This online buzz led to a major label bidding war, culminating in her signing with Atlantic Records in 2008.
Her debut album, "Hands," arrived in 2009 and became a defining release of the era's pop revival, reaching number five on the UK Albums Chart. It was propelled by the infectious, top twenty singles "New in Town" and "Remedy," the latter of which was co-produced by RedOne. The album showcased her knack for crafting shimmering, intelligent pop anthems and featured collaborations with notable producers like Greg Kurstin and Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. Following extensive touring, she parted ways with her major label, embracing a more independent and artistically adventurous path.
Her subsequent albums saw her delve deeper into club-oriented sounds and conceptual themes. "Nocturnes" (2013), influenced by classic house and disco, was praised for its sophisticated production, while "Working Girl" (2015) explored themes of modern femininity and ambition within corporate culture. Throughout her career, she has remained a prolific and respected DJ, performing at major festivals and clubs worldwide. In 2022, she returned with her fourth studio album, "Tomorrow's Yesterdays," a self-produced project that reflected a more personal and experimental direction. Continuously evolving, Little Boots maintains a dedicated following, balancing her solo work with collaborative productions and dynamic live performances that affirm her enduring presence in electronic music.
