Kill Hannah Biography

news-detailsKill Hannah emerged from the Chicago alternative rock scene in the mid-1990s as a distinctive voice blending glam, gothic, and electronic influences into a dramatic and melodic sound. Formed in 1993 by vocalist and guitarist Mat Devine, the band carved out a dedicated following over two decades with their atmospheric music and theatrical live performances, becoming a staple of the post-millennium rock landscape before their eventual dissolution.

The band's foundation was a creative outlet for Devine, who began writing and recording music under the Kill Hannah moniker while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The project quickly evolved into a full band, solidifying a lineup that, at various points, included guitarist Dan Wiese, bassist Greg Corner, and drummer Garrett Hammond, among others. They built their reputation through relentless touring and a series of self-released EPs, cultivating a passionate fanbase drawn to their androgynous style and anthemic songs about alienation and romance.

Kill Hannah's breakthrough came with the 2002 single "Kennedy," a track that encapsulated their signature blend of shimmering guitars and brooding pop sensibility. The song's success led to a major label deal and the release of their debut full-length album, "For Never & Ever," in 2003. This period marked their commercial peak, with extensive touring alongside acts like The Used, 30 Seconds to Mars, and AFI, and placement of their music in films like The Girl Next Door and on television shows such as The O.C..

The band maintained a consistent output despite label changes, releasing subsequent albums including "Until There's Nothing Left of Us" (2006) and "Wake Up the Sleepers" (2009). Known for their direct connection with fans, whom they affectionately called "The Children," Kill Hannah also released numerous EPs and live DVDs, documenting their intense concert energy. After six studio albums and countless tours, the members gradually pursued other projects, with Mat Devine focusing on a solo career and writing. While no longer active, Kill Hannah's legacy endures as influential purveyors of a particularly stylish and emotive brand of alternative rock that left a lasting mark on their genre and their devoted listeners.
