Kelly Hansen, born on April 18, 1961, in Aurora, Colorado, is an American singer best known for his powerful tenure as the lead vocalist of the iconic rock band Foreigner from 2005 to 2025. With a career spanning over four decades, Hansen has carved out a distinguished place in the rock music landscape, first as a driving force in the hard-rock scene of the 1980s and later as the commanding frontman for one of the most beloved arena-rock acts in history. Raised in Aurora, Hansen attended Smoky Hill High School, where his early interest in music began to take shape. After graduating, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his ambitions, initially working as an independent studio singer. This behind-the-scenes foundation proved invaluable, honing his vocal chops and connecting him with key figures in the industry. In 1984, Hansen met guitarist Robert Sarzo and bassist Tony Cavazo—brothers of Quiet Riot's Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo, respectively—and together they formed the hard-rock band Hurricane. The group achieved moderate commercial success throughout the mid-to-late 1980s and into the early 1990s, releasing albums that showcased Hansen's dynamic range and charismatic stage presence. However, the band's momentum was halted when their record label went bankrupt in 1991, leading to their disbandment shortly thereafter.

Undeterred by this setback, Hansen continued to build his reputation as a versatile and in-demand vocalist. He lent his talents as a guest and session singer to a wide array of projects, including Slash's Snakepit, the project of the famed Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, as well as collaborations with Don Dokken and the band Bourgeois Pigs. In 1998, he joined the melodic rock group Unruly Child, replacing vocalist Mark Free, and recorded a new album with them that was released in early 1999. The new millennium saw Hansen reunite with Hurricane for a comeback album, Liquifury, in 2001, followed by a self-titled project with Perfect World in 2003 alongside Fabrizio V.Zee Grossi. These years of prolific collaboration solidified his reputation as a reliable and electrifying performer, setting the stage for the biggest opportunity of his career.

In 2005, Hansen was tapped to join Foreigner as the band's third lead singer, following the departure of original frontman Lou Gramm in 2003 due to ongoing conflicts with guitarist and founder Mick Jones. Hansen stepped into the formidable role of interpreting classic hits like "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Juke Box Hero," and he quickly won over audiences with his gritty yet soulful delivery and high-energy live shows. Over the next two decades, he became the voice of Foreigner for a new generation, touring extensively and helping the band maintain its status as a perennial concert draw. His tenure lasted until 2025, when he departed following the band's summer tour, passing the torch to multi-instrumentalist Luis Maldonado, who had been a member since 2021.
