Born on 25 May 1972 as Rahul Kumar Johar to producer Yash Johar, he was raised in a film-centric environment in Mumbai. After completing his education, Johar initially worked as an assistant director on several films, including the acclaimed drama Lamhe and the crime thriller Baazigar, learning the nuances of the industry from the ground up. He made his directorial debut in 1998 with the romantic comedy-drama Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a coming-of-age story starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji. The film was a massive critical and commercial success, earning Johar the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment as director, as well as the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay, instantly establishing him as a major new talent.

Johar followed this with the family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001, an ensemble piece featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor. The film was a phenomenon, becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year and solidifying Johar’s reputation for crafting emotionally charged, visually opulent family sagas.
