Joe Exotic, born Joseph Allen Schreibvogel, became an unlikely global media sensation as the flamboyant and controversial central figure of the Netflix documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. A former zoo operator, aspiring country singer, and political candidate, his life is a tapestry of eccentric ambition, bitter rivalries, and criminal conviction that captivated audiences worldwide. His story, marked by his intense feud with animal rights activist Carole Baskin, transformed him from a regional oddity into a household name synonymous with the bizarre underworld of big cat breeding.

Born in Garden City, Kansas, in 1963, Exotic's early life included a stint as the police chief of Eastvale, Texas, before he entered the world of exotic animals. After the death of his brother in 1997, he sold a family pet store and eventually founded the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, commonly known as the G.W. Zoo, in Oklahoma in 1999. There, he built a persona defined by bleached mullet hairstyles, flashy attire, and a relentless drive for publicity. He bred tigers and other big cats for cub-petting exhibits, hosted a low-budget online talk show, and attempted to launch a reality television series with producer Rick Kirkham, though much of the footage was lost in a 2015 fire. His forays into politics began with an attention-grabbing independent campaign for the 2016 U.S. presidency.

Exotic's notoriety was cemented by his venomous, years-long feud with Carole Baskin, the founder of Big Cat Rescue, whom he accused of hypocrisy and sought to discredit through viral videos and protests. This conflict culminated in his arrest in September 2018. In 2019, he was convicted on 17 federal charges of animal abuse and, most seriously, two counts of attempted murder for hire for hiring two men to kill Baskin. He was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison. A 2021 appeal successfully argued the murder-for-hire counts were improperly grouped, leading to a reduced sentence of 21 years in January 2022. His incarceration did not end his public pursuits; he announced a candidacy for the 2024 presidential election as a Democrat in 2023.

The 2020 release of Tiger King on Netflix during the COVID-19 pandemic propelled Exotic to unprecedented fame, inspiring countless memes and watercooler discussions. His life had previously been documented by Louis Theroux in the film America's Most Dangerous Pets and later revisited in Shooting Joe Exotic. The cultural phenomenon also inspired the scripted drama series Joe vs. Carole. While his legacy is heavily criticized for animal welfare violations and criminal activity, Joe Exotic remains a defining example of modern, stranger-than-fiction celebrity, his story a saga of ambition, conflict, and crime played out under the glaring lights of reality television.
