Emerging from the vibrant Tempe, Arizona music scene in 1987, Gin Blossoms became one of the definitive alternative pop-rock bands of the 1990s, crafting a signature sound of jangling guitars and introspective, melodic songwriting that resonated with a generation. The band's core lineup originally featured guitarist and vocalist Jesse Valenzuela, guitarist Doug Hopkins, bassist Bill Leen, and drummer Phillip Rhodes. Their early years were spent honing their craft locally, eventually releasing the independent album Dusted in 1989, which caught the attention of A&M Records.

The band's major label debut, 1992's New Miserable Experience, propelled them to national fame, though its creation was fraught with difficulty. The album's breakthrough single, "Hey Jealousy," written by the troubled Doug Hopkins, became a massive hit, but Hopkins was dismissed from the band during the supporting tour due to personal struggles; he died by suicide in late 1993. Despite this tragedy, the album achieved enduring success, eventually selling over four million copies. Their 1996 follow-up, Congratulations I'm Sorry, continued their commercial streak, going platinum and producing the hits "Follow You Down" and "As Long as It Matters," the latter earning a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. The song "Til I Hear It from You," featured on the soundtrack for the film Empire Records, also became a major hit in 1995. However, internal pressures led the band to announce a hiatus in 1997. They reunited in 2001 and have remained a consistent touring act ever since, releasing new studio albums including Major Lodge Victory (2006), No Chocolate Cake (2010), and Mixed Reality (2018). The band's current lineup includes founding members Jesse Valenzuela and Bill Leen, along with longtime guitarist Scott Johnson, drummer Scott Hessel, and vocalist/guitarist Robin Wilson.
