Emerging from Sydney's vibrant music scene in 2007, Empire of the Sun established itself as one of Australia's most visually arresting and sonically adventurous electronic pop duos. The project was a creative fusion of two established artists: vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Luke Steele, known for his work with the band The Sleepy Jackson, and guitarist and vocalist Nick Littlemore, a prolific producer and one-half of the electronic act Pnau. Together, they crafted a unique aesthetic that blended lush, synth-driven soundscapes with extravagant, otherworldly costumes and stage performances, creating a complete audiovisual experience.

Their debut album, "Walking on a Dream," released in 2008, served as their monumental breakthrough. The record was a critical and commercial success, propelled by its infectiously optimistic title track and the single "We Are the People." The album's blend of 80s-inspired synth-pop, disco rhythms, and indie sensibilities resonated globally, earning the duo several ARIA Awards in their home country, including Best Pop Release and Single of the Year for "Walking on a Dream." The album's enduring popularity was cemented when its title track later experienced a significant resurgence in streams and cultural relevance years after its initial release.

Following a lengthy gap filled with solo projects and production work for other artists, including Littlemore's continued work with Pnau and collaborations with Elton John, Empire of the Sun returned in 2013 with their sophomore effort, "Ice on the Dune." This album doubled down on their maximalist approach, featuring even more grandiose production and thematic storytelling. It debuted at number one on the Australian albums chart and spawned the hit single "Alive." Their third studio album, "Two Vines," arrived in 2016, incorporating influences from 70s California pop and further exploring tropical and botanical themes within their artistic universe.

While their release schedule has been deliberate, their live performances have become legendary for their theatricality. Steele, often adorned in elaborate headdresses and armor, serves as the consistent frontman during tours, as Littlemore has historically been less involved in live performances, focusing instead on the project's studio creation. The duo's influence is noted in their pioneering of a specific, highly-stylized brand of electronic pop that prioritizes artistry and concept alongside catchy melodies. Empire of the Sun remains a singular act, their music a permanent fixture in the landscape of modern Australian electronic music, celebrated for its ability to transport listeners to a vibrant, sun-drenched dreamscape.
