Emmelie de Forest
Emmelie de Forest emerged as a captivating voice on the international stage when she secured victory for Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, a triumph that catapulted the singer-songwriter from Scandinavia to European fame. Born Emmelie Charlotte-Victoria de Forest on February 28, 1993, in Randers, Denmark, she was raised in Mariager and developed an early passion for music, influenced by folk and pop sounds. Her father, Ingvar de Forest, passed away in 2010, a personal loss that preceded her major career breakthrough.
Her path to Eurovision began after she was discovered by Danish composer and producer Frederik Thaae, who recognized her distinctive, husky vocal tone. Selected through Denmark's national selection competition, Melodi Grand Prix, de Forest represented her country in Malmö, Sweden, with the stirring anthem "Only Teardrops." The song's powerful fusion of pop melodies with a driving folk-inspired drum rhythm resonated deeply with audiences and juries across the continent, earning Denmark its third Eurovision win. This victory was not just a personal milestone but a national celebration, and "Only Teardrops" became a hit across Europe, topping charts in several countries and achieving platinum certifications.
Capitalizing on her sudden fame, de Forest released her debut album, also titled Only Teardrops, later in 2013. The record showcased her folk-pop style and included the singles "Hunter & Prey" and "Rainmaker," the latter of which she performed as the official song of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, where she also acted as host during the voting sequence. Her subsequent musical journey saw her exploring a more electronic pop direction with her 2017 EP, History, and her second studio album, TBA, which was released independently in 2021.
Beyond her own recordings, de Forest has established herself as a songwriter for other artists, contributing to projects across Europe. She has also been an advocate for environmental causes, notably serving as an ambassador for the Danish Society for Nature Conservation. While she has not replicated the singular, continent-wide spotlight of her 2013 win, Emmelie de Forest remains a respected figure in the Nordic music scene, continuing to write and release music that blends her folk roots with contemporary pop sensibilities, forever remembered as the artist who brought "Only Teardrops" to the world.
