Crowded House Biography

news-detailsCrowded House is an Australian and New Zealand rock band renowned for their melodic sound and poignant lyrics, formed in 1985 in Melbourne, Australia. The band, originally named The Mullanes, gained international acclaim with their hit single "Don't Dream It's Over" from their self-titled debut album, released in 1986. This track, characterized by its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics, quickly became a defining anthem of the late 1980s and helped establish the band's enduring legacy in the music industry.

The founding members of Crowded House included Neil Finn, who served as the vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter, alongside drummer Paul Hester and bassist Nick Seymour. Both Finn and Hester were previously associated with the band Split Enz. The band's unique sound combined elements of rock with thoughtful lyrics, allowing them to carve a niche for themselves in both the Australian and international music scenes. They achieved notable commercial success in the United States with their debut album, which also featured the Top Ten hit "Something So Strong."

During the early 1990s, Crowded House continued their upward trajectory with the release of their third and fourth albums, Woodface and Together Alone. These albums solidified their popularity in the UK, mainland Europe, and South Africa, contributing hits such as "Fall at Your Feet," "Weather with You," and "Distant Sun." Their compilation album, Recurring Dream, further showcased their best works. The band received significant recognition for their contributions to music, with Neil Finn and his brother Tim Finn being awarded an OBE in June 1993.

Despite their success, Crowded House disbanded in 1996 after a series of farewell concerts, notably the "Farewell to the World" shows in Melbourne and Sydney. The departure of Hester, who tragically died by suicide in 2005, marked a poignant moment in the band’s history. However, in 2007, the group re-formed, introducing drummer Matt Sherrod into the lineup. They released two albums, Time on Earth and Intriguer, both of which achieved number one status in Australia, demonstrating their enduring appeal.

After another hiatus, Crowded House reunited in 2020 with a new lineup that included Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, producer Mitchell Froom, and Finn's sons Liam Finn and Elroy Finn. This revitalized group released their latest album, Gravity Stairs, in 2024, continuing to innovate and expand their musical legacy. As of 2021, the band has sold over 15 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in November 2016, a testament to their significant impact on the music landscape over the decades.
