Circa Survive
Circa Survive emerged from Philadelphia in 2004 as a distinctive force in the experimental rock scene, renowned for their intricate guitar work, ethereal soundscapes, and the impassioned vocals of frontman Anthony Green. The band's formation was spearheaded by Green, fresh from his tenure with the post-hardcore act Saosin, and guitarist Colin Frangicetto. They quickly solidified their lineup with guitarist Brendan Ekstrom, bassist Nick Beard, and drummer Steve Clifford, crafting a sound that deftly blended post-hardcore energy with progressive and ambient textures. Their artistic ambition was immediately realized on their 2005 debut album, Juturna, released on Equal Vision Records, which cultivated a dedicated fanbase drawn to its complex musicianship and emotional depth.
The band's claim to fame solidified with their acclaimed sophomore album, On Letting Go, in 2007. The record expanded their sonic palette and lyrical themes, cementing their status as critical darlings within the alternative scene. This success led to a major-label venture, with their third album, Blue Sky Noise, arriving in 2010 via Atlantic Records. The album marked a period of heightened visibility, debuting at number 11 on the Billboard 200. Asserting creative independence, Circa Survive self-released their fourth album, Violent Waves, in 2012, a move that underscored their commitment to artistic autonomy. They continued their prolific output with Descensus (2014) on Sumerian Records and The Amulet (2017) on Hopeless Records, each chapter refining their signature sound while exploring new emotional and musical territories.
After nearly two decades, Circa Survive announced an indefinite hiatus in 2022. Anthony Green confirmed in 2025 that the hiatus was a permanent disbandment, leading him to focus on other projects, most notably as the lead vocalist for the post-hardcore supergroup L.S. Dunes, which features members of My Chemical Romance and Coheed and Cambria. However, the story of Circa Survive found a new, unexpected epilogue in February 2026, with the announcement that the original lineup would reunite for a performance at the Louder Than Life festival on September 19, 2026. This reunion show promises to celebrate the enduring legacy of a band whose innovative approach to rock music left a profound and lasting impact on their genre.
