Chris Cuomo is an American television journalist best known for his prominent roles as a news anchor and host at CNN, where he led the network's prime-time lineup with Cuomo Prime Time. The son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and brother of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, his career in broadcast journalism has been marked by high-profile positions and significant controversy, leading to his current role at NewsNation.
Born Christopher Charles Cuomo on August 9, 1970, in New York City, he was raised in a deeply political family. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and later a Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law, being admitted to the New York Bar in 1995. His initial foray into media was not in front of the camera but as a field producer for Fox News, before moving to CNBC and then CBS News, where he worked on the investigative program 60 Minutes II.
Cuomo's on-air career began to flourish at ABC News, where he started in 2000. He served as a correspondent for Primetime and later became the network's chief law and justice correspondent. He held several key positions, including co-anchor of the newsmagazine 20/20 and news anchor for Good Morning America from 2006 to 2009. His work at ABC often involved covering major legal stories and high-profile trials, establishing him as a recognizable face in American news.
In 2013, Cuomo transitioned to CNN, where he initially co-hosted the network's morning show, New Day, alongside Alisyn Camerota and later Kate Bolduan. His tenure there was considered successful, helping to build the program's audience. In June 2018, he moved to the prime-time slot, launching Cuomo Prime Time, which became one of CNN's most-watched programs. The show was notable for its conversational, often combative interviews and analysis.
Cuomo's career at CNN ended abruptly in December 2021. He was terminated following an investigation into the extent of his involvement in advising his brother, Andrew Cuomo, on how to respond to multiple sexual harassment allegations that led to the governor's resignation. CNN stated that his actions violated journalistic standards and company policies. After his departure, Cuomo joined Nexstar Media Group, launching Cuomo on the cable network NewsNation in October 2022, where he continues to host a weeknight news and interview program. He is married to Cristina Greeven Cuomo, a magazine editor, and they have three children.
