Breaking Benjamin
Breaking Benjamin is an American alternative metal band that emerged from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1999. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Benjamin Burnley alongside drummer Jeremy Hummel, the band quickly established itself within the rock genre. With a sound characterized by heavy guitar riffs, angst-laden lyrics, and powerful melodies, Breaking Benjamin became known for their ability to blend hard rock elements with emotional depth, making them a significant presence in the early 2000s rock scene.
The band’s debut album, "Saturate," was released in 2002 and featured the breakout single "Polyamorous," which helped to propel them into the mainstream. This initial lineup also included guitarist Aaron Fink and bassist Mark James Klepaski. Following the success of their first album, they released "We Are Not Alone" in 2004, which solidified their reputation and included hits like "So Cold" and "Sooner or Later." However, in 2005, Hummel left the band, and Chad Szeliga joined as the new drummer, leading to a new era for Breaking Benjamin.
With Szeliga on board, the band released two more successful albums, "Phobia" in 2006 and "Dear Agony" in 2009. "Phobia" marked a significant commercial peak, featuring well-received singles such as "The Diary of Jane" and "Breath." Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including Burnley’s recurring health issues that led to an extended hiatus in early 2010. During this period, a compilation album, "Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin," was released without Burnley’s authorization, resulting in legal disputes that ultimately led to the dismissal of Fink and Klepaski.
When Breaking Benjamin returned in late 2014, it was with a new lineup, which included bassist and backing vocalist Aaron Bruch, guitarist and backing vocalist Keith Wallen, guitarist Jasen Rauch, and drummer Shaun Foist. This reinvigorated group released "Dark Before Dawn" in 2015, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, followed by "Ember" in 2018, which also performed impressively, landing at number three on the same chart. Their ability to maintain a consistent sound while navigating lineup changes highlights Burnley’s role as the primary composer and driving force behind the band’s music.
In addition to their studio albums, Breaking Benjamin released "Aurora" in 2020, a compilation featuring acoustic reworkings of past songs along with a new original track. Throughout their career, the band has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 19 million units in the United States alone. They have garnered three RIAA-certified platinum records and two gold records, alongside multiple certified singles, including three multi-platinum hits. Breaking Benjamin continues to resonate with fans, known for their formulaic hard rock tendencies, powerful live performances, and the emotional resonance of their lyrics.
