Best Coast emerged from the sun-drenched landscape of Los Angeles as one of the defining indie rock acts of the early 2010s, capturing a generation's sense of longing and lazy summer days with their fuzzy, reverb-heavy sound. The duo, formed in 2009, consisted of vocalist and guitarist Bethany Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. Cosentino, a former child actress, had previously explored experimental drone music with the group Pocahaunted before channeling her experiences into more personal, pop-inflected songwriting. After a brief period attending college in New York City, she returned to the West Coast and began collaborating with Bruno, a fixture of the local music scene, crafting lo-fi demos that would form the foundation of their signature style.

The band built initial buzz through a series of limited 7-inch and cassette singles, leading to a deal with the label Mexican Summer. Their debut album, 2010's "Crazy for You," produced by Lewis Pesacov of Fool's Gold, became an unexpected commercial success. Its blend of surf rock, '60s girl group melodies, and lyrics about love, anxiety, and California life resonated widely, fueled by growing internet acclaim. To support the album live, the duo added touring drummer Ali Koehler of Vivian Girls, embarking on extensive tours and festival appearances throughout 2011.

For their sophomore effort, 2012's "The Only Place," Best Coast worked with producer Jon Brion, who helped refine their sound into a cleaner, more polished direction. The album continued to explore themes of home and identity but with heightened studio sophistication. Following its release, the band issued the "Fade Away" EP in 2013, which served as a bridge to their third studio album, "California Nights," in 2015. This record presented a denser, more guitar-driven aesthetic, reflecting a maturation in Cosentino's songwriting. After a five-year gap, Best Coast returned with their fourth album, "Always Tomorrow," in February 2020, which struck a balance between their classic sun-bleached sound and themes of personal recovery and optimism.

In 2023, Cosentino announced an indefinite hiatus for Best Coast to pursue a solo career, releasing her debut album "Natural Disaster" that same year. Concurrently, Bobb Bruno joined the shoegaze band Nothing as their bass guitarist, contributing to their 2026 album "A Short History of Decay." The duo's work, particularly their early output, remains a touchstone for a specific era of indie rock, celebrated for its heartfelt simplicity and evocative California cool.
