Aston Iain Merrygold, born on 13 February 1988, is a British singer-songwriter, dancer, actor, and television presenter who first captured the public’s imagination as a founding member of the hugely successful boy band JLS. Alongside his bandmates, he rose to prominence as the runner-up to Alexandra Burke on the fifth series of The X Factor, a platform that launched them into stratospheric commercial success. As part of JLS, Merrygold enjoyed a remarkable run of five number one singles on the UK Singles Chart and a chart-topping album on the UK Albums Chart, with the group selling over ten million records by the time they initially disbanded in 2013 before reuniting in 2020. His energetic stage presence, sharp falsetto, and slick dance moves made him a standout figure in the British pop landscape of the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Following the group’s first split, Merrygold wasted no time in expanding his career beyond performing. In 2013, he took on the role of a judge on the British dance talent show Got to Dance, showcasing his keen eye for choreography and entertainment. He also began work on a solo career, with his debut album tentatively titled "Showstopper" planned for a mid-2016 release. Although the album ultimately remained unreleased, its lead single, "Get Stupid," was released on 24 July 2015 and became a significant hit in Australia, reaching number ten on the ARIA Charts and earning a Platinum certification. The track demonstrated his ability to pivot toward a more funk-infused, contemporary pop sound, and reinforced his status as a versatile solo artist even without a full-length project.
In 2017, Merrygold brought his charisma to the dance floor once again when he was announced as a contestant on the fifteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing. Paired with professional dancer Janette Manrara, he impressed audiences with his natural rhythm and showmanship, but his journey was cut short in a controversial elimination on 5 November 2017, leaving him in tenth place. Despite the early exit, his participation endeared him to a new generation of viewers and solidified his reputation as a beloved television personality. Beyond his music and dance credentials, Merrygold has also demonstrated his acting versatility, appearing in television series such as Fun Song Factory and Almost Never, the latter of which allowed him to mentor young performers in a scripted setting.
Merrygold’s career took another exciting turn in 2024 when he starred in the UK tour of the beloved stage musical The Wizard of Oz, taking on the iconic role of the Tin Man. His performance was met with critical acclaim, and he later reprised the role in the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, cementing his status as a multifaceted entertainer capable of conquering the stage as well as the pop charts. Throughout his career, Merrygold has remained a dynamic and enduring figure in British entertainment, seamlessly transitioning between boy band stardom, solo artistry, television presenting, and theatrical performance. With his infectious energy and undeniable talent, he continues to be a prominent and beloved presence in the industry, and his ongoing work with JLS and beyond ensures his legacy remains firmly intact.
