Touch Episode 2.01 Event Horizon

Jake and Martin Bohm have a chance meeting with Amelia's mother, Lucy Robbins, on the Santa Monica Pier. At a nearby cafe, Martin shows her a video of Amelia from the New York board-and-care facility, explaining that Aster Corp. staged Amelia's death and put her there. They're also after Jake, who, like Amelia, sees patterns and connections. Martin recites the numbers from the Amelia Sequence. Lucy knows it well.

Jake gives Martin a message involving the numbers 2 and 4, which leads them to a motel. They confront a man who's kidnapped a girl, but she escapes, leaving her backpack. Inside is one of Amelia's tidal maps.

At a cafe in Brussels, a man pulls a photo from an overstuffed leather folder. He tells the waiter it's composer Frederick LeMay, whose Violin Concerto in F Major was like the voice of angels. But LeMay gave up music and became a baker; his shop is nearby. The man says each of us has a path to God, a preordained destiny. It's a mortal sin to deny it.

At Aster Corp., Tony Rigby begs his genius partner, Calvin Norburg, to give his speech to shareholders. Calvin doesn't want to work for money anymore. What he's developing now, the "God Sequence," is about the evolution of the human species. His complicated algorithm includes the Amelia Sequence. Calvin wants out of his contract. Tony says they'll go see the lawyers.

Martin asks an old reporter friend, Trevor Wilcox, to trace the kidnapper's license plate. Trevor works for Breakwire, a user-generated news organization. His resident hacker, Reuben Santiago, tracks the plate to a private detective working for lawyer Lawrence Pearl - whose company's big client is Aster Corp.

At LeMay's bakery, the folder man plays the concerto on a portable record player. Lemay says he once had a gift to see how things all fit together. The man replies he shares the same gift. Accusing LeMay of blasphemy, he kills him with a vicious slash to the throat. Finding sheet music, he locates a spot in the score and translates the notes to numbers - the Amelia Sequence.

Posing as a workman, Martin enters the law firm and uploads a sniffer program to Pearl's computer, allowing Santiago remote access. He crosses paths with Calvin and Tony. Aster Corp.'s lawyers inform Calvin he can't get out without losing the rights to all his work. OK, he'll give the speech.

Pearl's emails yield a list of places where the detective searched for the girl. One address is 5227, same as Pearl's office number and all the scores Jake got on the arcade games in Breakwire's rec room. Martin and Lucy find a girl there, but it's not Amelia. However, she met Amelia this morning near the pier, where Amelia gave her the map.

During his speech, Calvin reveals that Aster Corp. is using his algorithms to program machines to be more intelligent than any human, eventually making the very idea of being human obsolete. But he's now working on a single equation that could end illness, global warming, hunger, and more. Tony cuts him off. Later, a man named Vikash Nayar offers to fund Calvin's research.

In a cab, Lemay's killer looks at a picture of Jake.

At the beach, the girl explains that Pearl is her real father, who rejected her attempt to connect, then sent the detective after her. Near where she met Amelia, Jake finds a chess piece, the black knight.

In a nearby house, Amelia tells Calvin she wants to go home. He reminds her that her parents gave her away, and they're her family now.

At the house Martin rented from a cousin of his old friend Abraham, Jake places the black knight on a chessboard.

Santiago phones Martin. He's found a death certificate - of Jake, saying he died in a car crash. The date is blank. All they have to do is fill it in.
