'Oprah Winfrey Show' to Be Filmed in Chaotic Egypt

March 5, 2011 (4:26 am) GMT
Oprah Winfrey plans to broadcast a live show from Tahrir Square in Cairo sometime this month.

U.S. TV titan will take her show to the center of the Egyptian pro-democracy protests in the capital Cairo, according to a new report. Thousands of Egyptians flooded the city's Tahrir Square last month to call for the resignation of now-ousted president Hosni Mubarak after 30 years of dictatorship.

Winfrey has now accepted an invitation to set up a studio on the site later this month for a live show in a bid to attract holidaymakers back to the country, according to Egypt's new tourism minister Munir Fakhri Abdelnur. He tells local media, "The plan is for her to broadcast a live show from Tahrir Square on a Friday in March, but the date has not been finalized. The most famous TV hostess in the world accepted without hesitation."

Winfrey took 300 guests to Australia in December 2010 for a series of episodes in a trip funded by the Aussie tourism board.
