While the venue choice is good for marketing as the horror movie sees the 'Euphoria' actress playing a nun named Cecilia, some fans found it disrespectful.

AceShowbiz - Sydney Sweeney landed on hot water after she attended a special screening of her new horror film "Immaculate" at a church on Sunday, March 17. While the venue choice might be good for marketing as the movie sees Sweeney playing a nun, some fans found it disrespectful.

Sweeney was present at the event alongside film director Michael Mohan, who introduced the film before the screening began. The two also thanked the audience for being there with them. "I just want to thank you guys so much, because none of these would be possible without all your love and your support," the "Euphoria" star said.

"I appreciate you more than you know. I really hope that you will love this. I hope that you will jump and scream and go on a wild ride because it was a wild ride to me. Thank you so much for being here," she added.

Upon catching wind of videos and photos from the screening, some Internet users put Sweeney and the movie production team on blast. "Disgusting to use a church as a prop for a horror movie," one criticized.

Someone, meanwhile, mentioned singer Sabrina Carpenter, who faced backlash for filming a racy music video at a church. "Uh oh, let's see if she gets the Sabrina carpenter treatment," the person wrote. One other added, "No hate to the actors, but this is a kind of blasphemy."

However, some others thought that it was the best way to promote the flick. "this is PROMOTION at its finest," one fan gushed. "#immaculate is going hard. This is the way you launch a horror movie," another echoed the sentiment.

"I don't know how @neonrated and @helloflux were able to pull this off. Last night, 100 lucky @sydney_sweeney fans saw our film inside of a real, functioning church. This was the absolute coolest way for them to catch the film. (Though we're all probably going to hell now)," one other said.

Someone praised the church for co-signing the screening. "Grudging respect to the church that allowed this," the person noted.

Neither Sweeney nor the movie PR has yet to comment on the backlash.
