Hathaway, who had her breakthrough with her role as Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 film, teases a potential new 'Princess Diaries' sequel, while Julie Andrews discusses her concerns about returning to the franchise.

AceShowbiz - As whispers of "The Princess Diaries 3" stir excitement and nostalgia, the evolving landscape of Hollywood and public perception of royalty challenge the relevance of this beloved franchise. Anne Hathaway has hinted at the potential for a third installment in the beloved "Princess Diaries" franchise.

"We're in a good place," she told V Magazine. "That's all I can say. There's nothing to announce yet. But we're in a good place."

Hathaway starred as Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 original and its 2004 sequel, "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement". Julie Andrews played Mia's grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

Andrews had previously expressed reservations about a third film, saying, "It's quite a long time now since the two 'Diaries' were done, and I'm not sure, but sometimes it's best to leave a good thing alone." However, she added, "I'd be very happy if we did do another one. But I don't expect to."

Variety confirmed in 2022 that Disney was developing "The Princess Diaries 3" with screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji. The film is based on Meg Cabot's 2001 novel of the same name.

Hathaway has expressed her desire to involve Andrews in the sequel, saying, "If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."

Some have questioned the relevance of a "Princess Diaries" sequel in today's social and political climate, given declining public approval ratings of the monarchy and the highly publicized experiences of Meghan Markle.

However, writer Naomi May suggested that a third film could work if it addresses the privilege of royalty in a modern context. "If the third film can pivot to be inclusive and understanding of the privilege of royalty in today's world then maybe it can work," she wrote. "If not, it may well be a royal wave goodbye from audiences everywhere."
