The co-CEO of DC Studios confirms via Instagram that the 'House of the Dragon' star will play the Woman of Steel in the new DC Universe he spearheads with Peter Safran.

AceShowbiz - It's official! Milly Alcock is the new Supergirl. The actress, who is best known internationally through her role as young Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO's "House of the Dragon", has been confirmed to play the Woman of Steel in the new DC Universe spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Sharing the news was none other that Gunn himself. On Monday, January 29, he took to his Instagram page to share a screenshot of a headline of Deadline's article about Alcock's casting. In the caption, the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios wrote, "This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I'm incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU."

Gunn went on raving about 23-year-old star's talent, revealing that he was blown away by her auditions. "Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl," he continued. "She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira."

The Australia-born star reportedly beat out "CODA" actress Emilia Jones and former "American Housewife" star Meg Donnelly for the role. Donnelly also voiced Supergirl in some DC animated movies such as "Legion of Superheroes" and "Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One".

Alcock will headline the upcoming feature film "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" based on the DC comics run of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. No director is attached to the project as of yet, while Ana Nogueira ("The Vampire Diaries") was just hired to write the screenplay in November.

There, however, has been buzz that "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" will not mark Alcock's first appearance as Supergirl. It's widely speculated that she will make her debut as the alter ego of Kara Zor-El in "Superman: Legacy", which is about to start shooting in Georgia under the direction of Gunn.

In his Gods and Monsters launch video, Gunn explained the fundamental differences between Superman and Supergirl. "In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl," he divulged. "She's much more hardcore, she's not exactly the Supergirl we're use to seeing."

"Superman: Legacy" will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent a.k.a. the titular superhero, with Rachel Brosnahan being tapped to portray Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult being cast as Lex Luther. Other cast members include Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion.
