Celebrating her 34th birthday, the Canadian pop-rocker treats fans to her first music video in five years and launches a charity #HeadAboveWater T-shirt campaign.

AceShowbiz - Avril Lavigne celebrated her 34th birthday on Thursday, September 27 by releasing her first music video in five years.

The song and promo for "Head Above Water", which was partly filmed on location in Iceland, was inspired by the Canadian pop star's battle with Lyme disease, and one particular night when she thought she was dying.

"I had accepted that I was going to die," she recalls in a press release. "My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed 'God, please help to keep my head above the water'.

"In that moment, the songwriting of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on."

To accompany the new video, Lavigne has launched a charity #HeadAboveWater T-shirt campaign that will benefit The Avril Lavigne Foundation, which supports Lyme disease sufferers and those with serious illnesses and disabilities.

The singer was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014.
