Producers wanted to begin training the Northern Inuit puppies who will play Rollo in the fourth season, though the show is currently still filming season 3.

AceShowbiz - These cute little puppies may steal the spotlight from Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe in "Outlander" season 4. Though the Starz is still filming season 3 of the drama in South Africa, the series has found the pups who will play Rollo, a wolf hybrid that becomes a beloved member of the Fraser clan, in the fourth installment.

A first look at the two Northern Inuit puppies who will play Rollo has been obtained by EW. The dog is described as having a "penchant for getting into trouble, often sticking his large, wet nose into places it doesn't belong." A Starz spokesman adds, "The dog will play a key part in the adventure that lies ahead."

Rollo first appears in "Drums of Autumn", the fourth book of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. "They look cute, but tough. They should be just right to play Rollo when the time comes," Gabaldon says of the significance of the pup. "They'd need to growl and look menacing on command, I think, and carry back prey of one kind or another to their master. I assume they wouldn't let them catch things on camera ... especially fish, of course."

Rollo will first come into contact by young Murray (John Bell). Gabaldon details the encounter, "Rollo and Young Ian met on the docks in North Carolina, when Young Ian won the dog in a card game, and a life-long bond was formed between them, meaning that Rollo became a member of the ever-growing Fraser family."

"Outlander" will return for the third season this fall, but the premiere date isn't announced yet. Based on "Voyager", the upcoming season will chronicle Claire's struggles upon returning through the stones to 1948, as her marriage to Frank is at the edge of a split over the fact that she returned pregnant with Jamie's child. Meanwhile, Jamie in 1700s is trying to rebuild his life following Claire's departure. The couple will do anything to find their way back together through centuries and continents.
