'The Mummy' Director on Whether Tom Cruise's Character Dies in the First Trailer
Movie

Director Alex Kurtzman says that the recently-released trailer will 'make it feel unexpected,' adding, 'I think it's not going to feel at all like the other 'Mummy' movies.'

AceShowbiz - Director Alex Kurtzman has shared his thoughts about the big surprises in the recently-released first trailer for "The Mummy" reboot. Games Radar caught up with the helmer when he showed the teaser and some extended clips to a group of journalists, and talked about his favorite moments in and the tone of the remake.

"People are going to make a lot of assumptions about what 'The Mummy' is. It wasn't that long ago that there was a Mummy movie, and they're going to assume probably that it's kind of what it was before," Kurtzman said. "I think that's good, because, hopefully, the trailer will surprise everybody."

"It'll make it feel unexpected," he continued. "And the movies that I tend to love and want to go see, are the ones that feel different and unexpected. The movies whose personalities scream at me in the trailer - and they say: 'This is different.' "

"But I think it's just going to say to the audience that it's going to be very different," the helmer said, adding, "I think it's not going to feel at all like the other 'Mummy' movies. And the other 'Mummy' movies are fine; they are what they are; they're different."

Kurtzman also addressed the apparent "death" of Tom Cruise's Nick Morton after the plane crash. "I think for a monster movie to work and to scare me, my lead character has to be in the kind of jeopardy that I don't believe he or she could get out of. And if I want to take that fear to the next level, I want to believe that maybe that character will act unpredictably," he shared.

Speaking about how the roles of the female title character, who is portrayed by Sofia Boutella, and Russell Crowe's Dr. Henry Jekyll were crucial in the movie, Kurtzman said, "Sometimes, monsters can be used for good, and sometimes monsters have to be destroyed." He added, "It's up to our organisation to figure it out."

Written by Jon Spaihts, the new "Mummy" movie is coming to U.S. theaters on June 9, 2017. The upcoming action-horror film also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, Javier Botet and Dylan Smith.
