Alexis Bledel on the Last Four Words on 'Gilmore Girls': 'That Was Not What I Was Expecting at All'

Much like many fans who find the ending of 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' unresolvable, the Rory depicter says she's 'really surprised' by the last four words.

AceShowbiz - "Gilmore Girls" does come full circle in "Fall", the fourth part of the revival. At the end of "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" that dropped on November 25 on Netflix, the last four words that had been planned by series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino even before the original series ended its run in 2007 are revealed.

In the last scene, [SPOILER ALERT!] Rory and Lorelai are sitting at the gazebo and Rory turns to her mother. "Mom," Rory says, to which Lorelai replies, "Yeah?" Then Rory drops the bomb, "I'm pregnant."

If you're surprised by the jaw-dropping revelation, you are not alone. Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory, admits that she is also surprised by the last four words. "I was really surprised!" she tells ET of the Netflix series' ending. "That was not what I was expecting at all."

"I couldn't have imagined that that would be the conclusion that Amy wanted," she adds. "But then, once I sat with it for a little while, I figured of course -- it's full circle. It's an ending that only Amy could design."

Sherman-Palladino shares, "I wasn't sure when we started back [on the Netflix revival] whether or not they would be appropriate. I didn't know that they did in season seven -- all kinds of weird crap could have taken place -- but, luckily, that was wide open. And, actually, weirdly, it resonates even more now than it would've back then."

She goes on explaining, "It was the way we wanted to do it. Almost never in a career or in life do you ever get to do anything that you want to do, so the fact that we got to do it, the way that we wanted to do it, was like fate."

Since the revival ends on a big cliffhanger, Bledel is asked if she would be interested in returning for another continuation. "It all depends on the story," she answers. "And I don't know, I feel so grateful to get to do ['Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life'] that I'm not even looking forward necessarily at the prospect of doing more. I also feel like it's such a special story that I don't want to exploit it, or do too much, you know?"

On what kind of mother Rory would be, she says, "I think she'd have her own style. She might do things differently, but there would definitely be a lot of Lorelai's influence." She adds with a laugh, "And a lot of books for sure."

Other "Gilmore Girls" stars, meanwhile, imagine their characters' reaction to the news. Lauren Graham imagines that Lorelai would have a "mixed" reaction to her daughter's deja vu news. "[Rory]'s just such a sweet, and lovely, and smart, and great girl," she additionally tells ET. "I just think she'll be fantastic."

Kelly Bishop, who plays Rory's grandma Emily, says, "Well, the Emily we know by the end of the fourth episode would probably be pretty cool [with the news.]" David Sutcliffe, who plays Rory's father Christopher, thinks his character "would be happy! I think he wants to be a grandpa."
