The 'National treasure' actor is set to join Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Zachary Quinto in the movie which is currently in production.

AceShowbiz - Nicolas Cage has joined Oliver Stone-directed "The Snowden Files". The "Knowing" actor is set to play a former U.S. Intelligence Official in the thriller, joining other cast members which include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto and Melissa Leo among others.

According to Variety, the project is currently filming in Munich. The movie will be based on two books, "Time of the Octopus" by Snowden's lawyer in Russia, Anatoly Kucherena, and "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" by Guardian journalist Luke Harding. Gordon-Levitt portrays the NSA leaker while Woodley plays his on-screen girlfriend.

"Citizenfour", a documentary about Snowden by director Laura Poitras, won Best Documentary trophy at the Sunday, February 22 Oscars. At the event, host Neil Patrick Harris joked that Snowden "couldn't be here for some treason."

Although Glenn Greenwald, one of journalists who was a part of Snowden's revelation, told BuzzFeed the joke was "pretty pitiful," Snowden himself said in a Q&A session on Reddit following the Oscar win that he laughed at Harris' remark and was not offended. "To be honest, I laughed at NPH. I don't think it was meant as a political statement, but even if it was, that's not so bad," he wrote. "My perspective is if you're not willing to be called a few names to help out your country, you don't care enough."
