The latest installment in the 'Mad Max' franchise, 'Furiosa', has been met with critical acclaim and a thunderous standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.

AceShowbiz - On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to a rapturous reception. The film, starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, received an incredible six-minute standing ovation from the audience, according to various media outlets present at the event.

Hemsworth, who plays the sadistic warlord Dementus, and Taylor-Joy, who takes on the role of the titular Furiosa, were visibly moved by the ovation. Variety reported that Hemsworth shed tears and kissed director George Miller on the head.

"We worked very hard on this film, and it'll be very interesting to see what you make of it," Miller said ahead of the screening. "Thank you for having us."

"Furiosa" serves as a prequel to Miller's 2015 blockbuster "Mad Max: Fury Road", with Taylor-Joy portraying a younger version of Charlize Theron's character. The film has garnered rave reviews from critics, with Geoffrey Macnab of The Independent praising it as "a film made with purposeful savagery, and with considerable wit and lyricism, too."

The world premiere of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" also marked a highly anticipated return to the big screen for Hemsworth, who had taken a brief career break. The film is set to debut in cinemas globally on May 24, and with a reported budget of $170 million, it is expected to generate strong box office revenue.
