John Fogerty, who wrote the song for his band Creedence Clearwater Revival nearly five decades ago, defends Springsteen and explains the song's real meaning in a statement.

AceShowbiz - Bruce Springsteen's performance at Concert for Valor, which was held on Tuesday, November 11, sparked controversy. People criticized The Boss for singing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son", arguing the anti-war anthem was inappropriate for an event honoring U.S.' troops.

Springsteen performed the song with with Zac Brown and Dave Grohl at the televised concert. Many viewers immediately took to Twitter to voice their opinions about his song choice. "Hey Bruce Springsteen! Get off the stage with your anti American music!" one user wrote. Another added, " 'Fortunate Son' played at the Concert for Valor?! You ought to be ashamed."

John Fogerty, the Creedence Clearwater Revival lead vocalist, has now come to Springsteen's defence. He explained the real meaning of the song in a statement. " 'Fortunate Son' is a song I wrote during the Vietnam War over forty-five years ago," he said. "I do believe that its meaning gets misinterpreted and even usurped by various factions wishing to make their own case. At its core I believe the issue is really about what a great country we have that a song like this can be performed in a setting like Concert for Valor."

"Years ago, an ultra-conservative administration tried to paint anyone who questioned its policies as 'un-American,' " he continued. "That same administration shamefully ignored and mistreated the soldiers returning from Vietnam. As a man who was drafted and served his country during those times, I have ultimate respect for the men and women who protect us today and demand that they receive the respect that they deserve."

Springsteen also played other songs like "The Promised Land" and "Born in the USA" during the Tuesday event which took place at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Other musicians who performed at the free concert included Rihanna, Eminem, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood and Metallica.
