The husband of Queen Elizabeth II is expected to stay in hospital for two weeks to undergo an exploratory surgery following last week's abdominal investigations.

AceShowbiz - The Duke of Edinburgh, who will celebrate his 92nd birthday next Monday, is currently admitted to The London Clinic for exploratory surgery. Buckingham palace announced the news in a statement on Thursday, June 6.

"His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to the London Clinic for an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations. He is expected to stay in hospital for up to two weeks. Further updates will be issued when appropriate," the announcement read.

Prince Philip's surgery reportedly will be carried out on Friday. A spokesperson for the palace said that the prince "is in good spirit." The palace also underlined that the surgery was not emergency and it was planned after Prince Philip underwent abdominal investigations last week. The spokesperson declined to make further comments in regards to the prince's condition, while The London Clinic is not available for comments.

Prince Philip was taken to The London Clinic in a car after attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace earlier that day. Videos from the event showed him smiling and chatting with guests. He seemed to be in good spirit while walking around the garden to greet the guests.

Prime Minister David Cameron wished the prince speedy recovery via Twitter. "My best wishes to the Duke of Edinburgh who is in hospital. I hope he has a swift recovery," he tweeted on Thursday night.

According to BBC News, Prince Philip was originally scheduled to visit BBC's headquarter on Friday with the Queen, but she will carry out the engagement alone. BBC director-general Tony Hall and BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten will take her to a tour around the broadcasting center, as well as meeting journalists in the newsroom. She is also expected to meet Sir Bruce Forsyth and David Dimbleby, and watch a performance of "The Voice UK" coach Danny O'Donoghue with his band, The Script.
