Michael Bay Discusses Optimus Prime and His Return to Helm 'Transformers 4'
Movie

Assuring fans that Optimus will return to the fourth film despite the plan to have all new cast, Bay adds, 'We're basically taking from the history of where it was or where we left in Chicago.'

AceShowbiz - Recently, there have been swirling reports suggesting that "Transformers 4" will feature an all new cast of the robot characters. The news quickly sparked speculations that the fourth autobot war movie might be designed as a reboot without the appearance of Optimus Prime. Responding to the issue, director Michael Bay himself made sure that fans shouldn't worry that their beloved robot would not return to "T4".

Back at Comic-Con, Optimus depicter Peter Cullen stated that he didn't know if he would be back as the fan-favorited robot in the fourth movie or not. Asked by Huffington Post if Cullen would reprise his role, Bay claimed confidently, "Of Course! Of course!" He added, "Listen, when I heard his voice, it gave me chills."

In addition to assuring fans that Optimus would still play a major part in "Transformers 4", Bay explained that the forthcoming flick wouldn't be a reboot though it might feature a brand new cast ensemble. "No. We're basically taking from the history of where it was," he said, "or where we left in Chicago. And we're going to carry it on from there."

Back in 2011, shortly after "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" was released, Bay hinted that he might not return for the fourth film. Now that he has signed on to reprise his directing duty, Bay opened up that he just couldn't easily let someone else take over his seat in the franchise.

"I thought I was done," he admitted. "Then the ride came out [at Universal Studios Hollywood] and the two-and-a-half-hour lines. And then you're thinking, Oh my God, someone's going to take this over. And you start doing a lot of soul-searching. Like, OK, I'm about to do a little movie, 'Pain and Gain'... and the studio says they want to restart the franchise."

"And someone could come in here and screw it up, you know? So I'm thinking that if I do this last one, we set it on a new footing, we change a lot of things - but we keep the history of the three in place. But we broaden it so it can be set up and be carried on - it would have a better chance for survival, I guess. You know?"

"Transformers 4" is scheduled to open wide in the United States on June 27, 2014.
