Gotye Says 'Glee' Cover Song Sounds 'Ultra-Dry', 'Dinky and Wrong'

The original singer of 'Somebody That I Used to Know' claims the cover song didn't sound right because the vocals were 'ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense.'

AceShowbiz - Gotye was not really impressed by "Glee" cover of his single "Somebody That I used to Know", despite the fact that it helped him climb to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100. According to the Belgian-Australian singer, the cover song has a lot of flaws.

"They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense," he shared his thoughts to the Sunday Mail, "like it's playing to you from a cardboard box."

The 31-year-old indie rock star continued to slam the cover, which was sung by Darren Criss and his on-screen brother Matthew Bomer, when doing a separate interview with Sunday Herald Sun. He said, "It made it sound dinky and wrong."

"Somebody That I used to Know" reached the top spot on Hot 100 after "Glee" aired its episode that featured the cover song, and he performed the single with Kimbra on "Saturday Night Live". He became one of the few Australian singers who scored No. 1 single in the States.

Darren hasn't responded to the criticism, but earlier this month, he had already said that he always tried his best to do justice to every song he covers by "giving it as much energy and sincerity and passion to it."
